I’m lying in bed after a good night's sleep, luxuriating in the thought of a long weekend. A steaming cup of tea on the windowsill beside me is still too hot to drink. It’s the kind of Saturday morning I’d typically lie in and start my day by reading a chapter (or four) of my latest favorite book. This morning, though, I immediately grabbed my laptop to start writing. Still hazy from the night, lingering in the liminal space between sleep and being fully awake, I start putting words onto paper – before the fog lifts and, with it, the vivid memories of my dream.
I dreamt that one of my dear friends had bought a beautiful pair of shoes. Not just any type of shoes. No, they were magical shoes. Once I saw her with her shoes, I instinctively knew that I also wanted a pair. So she took me to the store where she had bought them, and slowly, I learned what their magic was all about.
Do you know that feeling when, deep down, something feels right even though it doesn't make any sense to you? You think about what your life would look like if you’d go for it, take the risk, jump off that cliff, and for a split second, you get this warm and exhilarating feeling in your body. That is, until your brain kicks in and starts throwing mental objections at you. For many of us, these things fall into the category of wild dreams we never get to.
These magic shoes help you to take action to realize your wildest dreams. They have the power to steer you in the right direction by putting one foot in front of the other onto the path that’s meant for you. They don’t take away your fears. They don’t make life easier. They just make sure that you keep going, regardless of the countless excuses and protests in your mind. These magic shoes can help you realize your dream life.
Inevitably, though, this also means they’ll walk you away from certain aspects of your current life. From the things that give you a sense of safety or belonging, from the approval and praise of others, or from the path you always had in mind for yourself. There are no guarantees on the box, only that life will eventually work out. What that’ll look like and how you’ll get there remain a mystery until you put on the shoes and start walking. Also, there’s no 30-day return period or anything. Once you try them on, there’s no going back.
I was standing in the shop with my shoes in my hand. They’d chosen me the second I walked into the shop. Everything about them felt right, and I was instantly pulled towards them. Now that the moment was here to put them on, I felt an immense fear coming over me, and my brain started shouting about all the things I might have to give up once I put them on. That’s when I woke up.
Ever since I’ve been thinking about these shoes and whether I’d buy them if they were available in real life. They were only €300 – a bargain for being led to your dream life, right? I’m really curious, would you buy them?
